Potentiometer Motorized Information

The Functional Side of a Rheostat
Rheostat works as a resistor that helps the circuit to control electrical resistance without having to interrupt the current flow. It does have of three different terminals with an attached wire that is covered using a type of wiper. This wiper slides down the coil or wire’s surface. Most of the time, this resistor is designed using a ceramic core to increase its capacity to resist electricity. You can easily find them in places or application that calls for the use of high voltage.
Several industrial products are now making use of potentiometers, instead of a rheostat resistor. This is due to the fact that electrical devices today required a minimal use of power. On the contrary, there are still existing applications which make use of these resistors. These devices may handle a significant amount of electricity and using this type of resistor is still highly recommended. Today, they can be frequently seen in common household devices such as speed controllers for motors and light dimmers. They can also be used in different products including blowers, pumps, arc lamps, model trains, respirator and other medical or dental equipment.
In choosing the type of rheostat to be used in a device, it is important to know that considering current is more necessary than the rating of wattage. If this component is used as a control for motors, it is very important to know two facts – that DC motors are speed-controlled, whereas only few AC motors are controllable. And so before selecting resistor, one must first identify the type of AC motor to be used especially of speed control is of prime importance. These resistors can be bought either with a fixed limiting control or one with the adjustable limiting control. The latter makes it possible to limit the rotation of the device.
